What is Apple Carplay?
Apple CarPlay was created to allow iPhone users to easily connect their device to their car’s infotainment system. Users can get directions, make calls, send and receive messages, and listen to music without touching their phones – helping them stay focused on the road.
[2018 update: Apple CarPlay now lets you use third-party mapping and navigation services – including Google Maps and Waze – through your car’s infotainment system. As a result, you’ll no longer be restricted to using just your iPhone’s built-in Apple Maps feature.]
How does Apple CarPlay work?
Similar to connecting an iPod, CarPlay will sync to your iPhone via the Lightning Connector (wireless connection will be coming later). It will then pull information directly from your iPhone while simultaneously charging it.
CarPlay compatible vehicles come with a dedicated voice-control function allowing you to access a selection of features without taking you hands off the wheel. If you’d rather, you can still use traditional buttons, dials and touchscreens to interact with your iPhone.
CarPlay features
CarPlay features Siri voice control that’s been specially reconfigured for driving scenarios. Numerous apps have also been redesigned to make them easier to use while driving, helping to make CarPlay as simple and as safe to sue on the move as possible.
Messages
Siri can read and reply to your text messages for you, so you never have to look at your phone while driving. You can also use voice commands to dictate your reply, too.
Maps
Another handy feature of CarPlay is the ability to use Apple’s navigation system while driving. You can see destinations based on recent trips, find addresses from your contacts list, view traffic conditions and check your estimated time of arrival. Turn-by-turn directions appear on your car’s dashboard screen and you can use Siri to change your desired route.
Music
CarPlay will also stream music, podcasts, audiobooks and iTunes Radio from your iPhone through your car’s stereo. It’ll even let you access music and other audio content through third-party apps such as Spotify and internet radio features. You can bring up tracks manually with built-in controls or via voice command.
Android Auto allows owners of Android smartphones and tablets to easily connect their device to their vehicle via the Dynavin iLink. Features such as making and receiving calls and text messages, using sat nav and listening to music are all possible thanks to this Google-developed system.
Similar to the rival Apple CarPlay system, Android Auto lets buyers use features on their smartphone through the car’s infotainment system while on the move. It’ll allow your phone to work seamlessly with the car’s built-in infotainment system without any ugly aftermarket modifications, too.
Android Auto is often easier to use and faster to respond than the car’s standard built-in system and, as a result, should prove less distracting for drivers. It also allows you to access a range of additional apps, such as internet radio and performance monitoring features, that might not come installed on the car’s standard infotainment system.
How does Android Auto work?
Android Auto uses a standard cable to connect your phone to your car. As a result, it’ll simultaneously charge your device and use its data connection for certain features.
Information from your device is displayed on the car’s central screen where you can access a plethora of features using voice control or your car’s infotainment input – whether it be touchscreen or button based.
Android Auto features
Maps
If your car doesn’t come with built-in sat nav, Android Auto lets you use Google Maps on your car’s infotainment system. Using this feature, you’ll be able to access turn-by-turn voice navigation, live traffic information and constantly updated maps for free.
Communication
Android Auto gives you the ability to make and receive phone calls and text messages through your phone. You can even use a selection of apps, such as WhatsApp and Skype, to keep in contact, too.
Music
Android Auto’s built-in audio player allows users to access their phone’s music library on the move. This system’s also compatible with Spotify music streaming and internet radio features and comes with a 90-day free trial of Google Music.
Apps
A huge range of apps will work with Android Auto – ranging from BBC News to Google Hangouts. Being able to update your phone regularly with new apps makes Android Auto more flexible than many traditional infotainment systems, too.
